tyreAn inflatable rubber hoop fitted round the rims of bicycle, car, and other road-vehicle wheels. The first pneumatic rubber tyre was patented in 1845 by the Scottish engineer Robert William Thomson (1822–73), but it was the Scottish inventor John Boyd Dunlop of Belfast who independently reinvented pneumatic tyres for use with bicycles in 1888–89. The rubber for car tyres is hardened by vulcanization. How to thank TFD for its existence?
