US v. American Tobacco Co.

    0.01 sec.

US v. American Tobacco Co.

US Supreme Court decision of 1911 dealing with the distinction between reasonable and unreasonable formations of trusts. The American Tobacco Co. appealed to the Supreme Court after being convicted of monopolistic practices by the federal government.

The federal district court had ordered the dissolution of the company, but the Supreme Court revised this decision on the grounds that the attempts to restrain trade had not been unreasonable. The Court ordered that the company be reorganized but not dissolved.
