US v. Classic

    0.04 sec.

US v. Classic

US Supreme Court decision of 1941 dealing with Congress's right to interfere with the operation of state primaries. Convicted of fraud in a Louisiana state primary, Classic appealed on the grounds that primaries, as functions of state political parties, were not subject to government regulation. The Court upheld Classic's conviction, ruling 4 to 3 that the primary had clear impact on the selection of federal representatives. Since Congress had the responsibility to monitor and regulate federal elections, state primaries were judged to be under Congressional authority.
