US v. Darby Lumber Co.

    0.05 sec.

US v. Darby Lumber Co.

US Supreme Court decision of 1941 that decided the issue of federal control of commerce, overturning Hammer v. Dagenhart of 1918.

The case dealt with the constitutionality of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938, which established maximum hours and minimum wages for workers. The interstate sale of any products manufactured in violation of the standards was strictly prohibited. The Court upheld the FLSA ruling that commerce is an integrated whole, not divisible into state and federal spheres. According to the unanimous decision, it was not the Court's role to judge the motives of Congressional legislation; Congress had the right to regulate national commerce without judicial interference.
