Bastet

Ancient Egyptian cat-headed goddess. Her cult centre was Bubastis (modern Tell Basta), the second-largest ancient site in the Nile delta after Tanis; it includes a large temple and a burial site for mummified cats.

From the New Kingdom, the cat (probably originally a lioness) was Bastet's special animal. Many bronze statuettes of the goddess show a cat-headed woman holding in her right hand a lion aegis (shield) and on her left arm a basket.
