Uchida, Mitsuko (1948– )

Japanese pianist. She studied in Tokyo and in Vienna, where she won the Beethoven Competition in 1968. She was also a prize-winner in the Chopin International Competition, Warsaw, in 1969. In 1982 she gave a cycle of the complete Mozart sonatas in London and Tokyo; she had much success with the English Chamber Orchestra in London as director-soloist in the complete Mozart concertos (1985–86). She has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She is particularly esteemed for her playing of Bartók.
