Udmurt

Autonomous republic in central Russian Federation, north of Tatarstan and northwest of Bashkortostan; area 42,100 sq km/16,200 sq mi; population (1990) 1,619,000 (59% Russian, 31% Udmurt, 7% Tatar). The capital is Izhevsk. There are timber, peat, quartz, tool and machine manufacturing, oil, and hydroelectric power generation industries. Flax and potatoes are grown.

The region is in the foothills of the western Ural Mountains. Half the republic is forested. The main river is the Kama.

The land of the Finno-Ugric Udmurts (or Votyaks) was conquered by Russia in the 15th–16th centuries. It was constituted as the Votyak Autonomous Region in 1920. Its name was changed to Udmurt in 1932, and became an Autonomous Republic in 1934. It has been part of the Russian Federation since 1991.
