Ugarit

Ancient trading-city kingdom (modern Ras Shamra) on the Syrian coast. It was excavated by the French archaeologist Claude Schaeffer (1898–1982) from 1929, with finds dating from about 7000 to about 1300 BC, including the earliest known alphabet.
