Uitenhage

Town in Eastern Cape province, South Africa, 33 km/20 mi northwest of Port Elizabeth; population (district, 1991) 182,500. The centre of an agricultural area, Uitenhage has railway workshops, a major car assembly plant, and cotton and woollen textile factories.

During its early days, the entire eastern frontier of the Cape Colony was administered from Uitenhage.
