Ujung Pandang

Chief port and capital of Sulawesi Selatan province on Sulawesi island, Indonesia; population (2000) 1,064,000. As well as fishing and food processing, industries include textiles and paper manufacture. Exports include coffee, rubber, copra, and spices. The city is home to Hasanuddin University (1956), the leading institution of higher education in eastern Indonesia.

Following the Portuguese, the Dutch established a trading station here in 1607, and the restored Dutch Fort Vredenburg alongside the harbour remains a notable landmark.
