Ukiah

Town and administrative headquarters of Mendocino County, northwest California; population (1990) 14,600. It is situated in the Ukiah or Yokayo (‘deep’) Valley, on the Russian River, 160 km/100 mi north-northwest of San Francisco. Winemaking, fruit packing, livestock raising, redwood lumbering, and the manufacture of masonite and plywood have all been important to the local economy. The community was founded in the 1850s on the road between San Francisco and Humboldt Bay, to the north.

The Latitude Observatory in the town is one of five established c. 1900 by the International Geodetic Association at 39°08' N. Mendocino College (1973) and a state hospital are also located in Ukiah.
