Ulam, Stanislaw Marcin (1909–1985)

Polish-born US mathematician. He was a member of the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atom bomb 1943–45 and from 1946 collaborated with Edward Teller on the design of the hydrogen bomb, solving the problem of how to ignite the bomb. All previous designs had collapsed.

Ulam was born and educated in Lviv (now in the Ukraine). On the invitation of mathematician John Von Neumann, he emigrated to the USA 1936 and joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
