Ulan-Ude

City in the southern Russian Federation, capital (since 1923), economic and cultural centre of the Republic of Buryat; population (2002) 359,400. Ulan-Ude is situated in southeastern Siberia south of Lake Baikal at the confluence of the Selenga and Ude rivers, and is a major station on the Trans-Siberian Railway. It is also the starting-point of the Trans-Mongolian line running to Ulan Bator and Beijing. A major industrial centre, Ulan-Ude manufactures locomotives and rolling stock, glass, timber, and foodstuffs; ship repairing is also a major industry.

Ulan-Ude was founded in 1666 as a Cossack fort. It has been a town since 1775, and had an annual fair attended by merchants from all over Siberia. It was made capital of the Far Eastern Republic in 1920. Industrial development began here in the 1930s.
