Ulfung, Ragnar (Sigurd) (1927- )

Norwegian tenor. He made his stage debut at Oslo in 1951, in Menotti's The Consul. He performed at the Royal Opera, Stockholm, from 1958 and sang in the first performance of Blomdahl's Aniara. He visited London with the company in 1960, performing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He created the title role in Maxwell Davies's Taverner (1972) and returned to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Mime in Friedrich's production of the Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen/The Ring of the Nibelung. His US debut was made at San Francisco, in 1967; he appeared in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1972, as Mime. Other roles included Tom Rakewell (Stravinsky, The Rake's Progress), Don Carlos (Verdi, Don Carlos), Alfredo (Verdi, La Traviata), and Cavaradossi (Puccini, Tosca). He sang Strauss's Valzacchi at Santa Fe in 1992. He was also active in concert and oratorio.
