Ulsan

Industrial city in South Kyongsang province, southeastern South Korea; population (2005) 880,800. Situated near Pusan on Ulsan Bay, part of the Sea of Japan, there are nearby whaling stations, and shipbuilding at the city's Pangojin port. Industries include coal mining, oil refining, and the manufacture of vehicles, petrochemicals, and fertilizers.

Ulsan was historically a fishing port and agricultural marketing centre, but since the opening of good rail and road communication to Seoul and Pusan in 1962, it has developed as an industrial centre.
