Ulster County

County in southeast New York; area 2,929 sq km/1,131 sq mi; population (1990) 165,300. It is bounded by the Hudson River to the east. Most of the county is in the Catskill Mountains, although the east section is in the Hudson Highlands, and the Shawangunk Mountains run diagonally north–south in its east-central region. Its administrative headquarters, industrial hub, and largest city is Kingston. It is an exurban and agricultural county, growing apples, grapes, corn, and truck crops and raising dairy cattle and poultry. There are also popular resorts in the southwest.
