ultrafiltration

Process by which substances in solution are separated on the basis of their molecular size. A solution is forced through a membrane with pores large enough to permit the passage of small solute molecules but not large ones.

Ultrafiltration is a vital mechanism in the vertebrate kidney: the cell membranes lining the Bowman's capsule act as semipermeable membranes, allowing water and substances of low molecular weight such as urea and salts to pass through into the urinary tubules but preventing the larger proteins from being lost from the blood.
