Ulverston

Market town on the Furness peninsula, in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England; population (2001) 11,500. The town has a wide range of industries, including electrical engineering, and products include oils, chemicals, plastics, and medical supplies.

Ulverston has a church reputed to contain, perhaps in the tower of 1540, some of the stones from Furness Abbey. John Rennie built a ship canal (1793–96) here, long since disused. Ulverston was the birthplace of John Barrow (1764–1848), founder of the Royal Geographical Society, and the comedian Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy).
