In June 1961 Umkhonto Wesizwe (Spear of the Nation) was formed under the leadership of Nelson Mandela.
He was born in Cape Town in 1954 and, after matriculating in 1976, he went into exile for nearly 10 years, becoming close friends with the late Chris Hani, chief of the ANC's Umkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation) guerrilla force.
