Umlauf, Ignaz (1746–1796)

Austrian composer. He was appointed director of Joseph II's new national Singspiel theatre in 1778, the inaugural work being his Die Bergknappen.

He became a viola player in the orchestra of the court opera in 1772, and on the foundation of the national Singspiel theatre by Joseph II in 1778 became its director. From 1789 he was Salieri's deputy as Kapellmeister of the court chapel. He also took part with Mozart in the performance of Handel's oratorios organized by Gottfried van Swieten. He was the father of Michael Umlauf.
