Umlauf, Michael (1781–1842)

Austrian composer and conductor. He was director of music at the court theatres in Vienna. On and after the revival of Fidelio in 1814 he assisted Beethoven, who was then too deaf to hear the orchestra, to conduct some of his major works.

He studied under his father, Ignaz Umlauf, then became a violinist at the Opera and was conductor of the two court theatres 1810–25 and again from 1840.
