Unalaska Island

One of the Fox Islands, which form part of the east Aleutian Islands, in southwest Alaska; dimensions 120 km/75 mi east–west and 8–48 km/5–30 mi north–south. The windy, treeless island is a centre for fishing, fish processing, and trapping by its Aleut population. Dutch Harbor, on Amaknak Island in Unalaska Bay, on the northeast side, is the site of a Naval base.

Settled by Russians in the 1760s, it was the centre of fur trading activities in the Aleutians until the end of the 18th century. The town of Unalaska, to the south, is the oldest European settlement in the Aleutians; population (1990) 3,100. It has a large Russian Orthodox church.
