underwriting

Acceptance of a business risk for a fee often referred to as a premium. In insurance, an underwriter assesses an insurable risk, determines a premium, and underwrites the risk on behalf of his company or syndicate. In a company flotation, a merchant bank will often underwrite the issue of shares for a fee, agreeing to purchase any shares that are not taken up by the public.
