Union| Town and administrative headquarters of Union County, northwest South Carolina; population (1990) 9,800. It is located 42 km/26 mi southeast of Spartanburg. It is a stop on the Southern Railway. Union has cotton, hosiery, and lumber mills, and also produces peaches, fertilizer, and bakery products. It was settled late in the 18th century around the log cabin Union Church, which welcomed both Presbyterians and Episcopalians. |
