Union County

County in northeast New Jersey; area 268 sq km/103 sq mi; population (1990) 493,800. It is bounded by the Passaic River to the northwest and by Newark Bay and the Arthur Kill to the east. Its administrative headquarters is Elizabeth, an important port and transportation hub. Part of the New York metropolitan area, the county is highly industrialized; products include chemicals, steel, foodstuffs, machinery, pharmaceuticals, tools, electronic and automotive parts, and automobiles. Industrial centres include Linden, Plainfield, and Rahway. Among primarily residential communities are Cranford, Roselle, Scotch Plains, and Summit.

County in west-central Ohio; area 1,132 sq km/437 sq mi; population (1990) 32,000. Its administrative headquarters is Marysville, which has some manufacturing. The county is largely rural, depending on dairy, grain, livestock, and poultry farming. Natural resources include sand, gravel, and limestone.
