Presidential Medal of FreedomHighest peacetime civilian award in the USA, instituted by President Kennedy in 1963. It is conferred annually on Independence Day by the president on those making significant contributions to the ‘quality of American life’, and often includes unknown individuals as well as artists, performers, and politicians. It replaced the Medal of Freedom awarded from 1945 for acts and service aiding US security which had been conferred 24 times on an irregular basis. How to thank TFD for its existence?
