Market set up by the London Stock Exchange in 1980 for the trading of shares of small to medium-sized companies which did not qualify for a full listing. The USM closed in 1996.

Meanwhile, the Unlisted Securities Market, set up in 1981 to trade shares of smaller companies, has been replaced by the Alternative Investment Market.
