unshielded twisted pair

In computing, a form of cabling used for local area networks (LAN), now commonly used as an alternative to coaxial cable. The benefits of UTP over coaxial cables are that it is cheaper to install and can be used by a variety of LAN standards, for example Ethernet and Token Ring, as well as being used for telephone circuits.
