Uppark| Late 17th-century house in West Sussex, England, 8 km/5 mi south of Petersfield. Uppark was given to the National Trust in 1954 and retains much of the original decorations and furnishings, including flock wallpapers and damask curtains. However, a high proportion of this was destroyed by fire in August 1989. The house was reopened in 1995 following a complete restoration. |
| It was the home of the Fetherstonhaugh family from 1747, and its many famous visitors included Emma Hart (later Lady Hamilton and Nelson's mistress), Charles Greville, the Prince Regent, and H G Wells, whose mother was housekeeper there for several years. |
| The restoration of the house was revolutionary in that it attempted to restore the house to its exact state the day before the fire. Modern reproductions and replacements of features such as wallpaper were ‘aged’ by the incorporation of original fragments. |
