Haute-Garonne

Département in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France; area 6,300 sq km/2,432 sq mi; population (1999 est) 1,046,300. Vines, cereals, fruit, and potatoes are cultivated, and livestock is raised. There are chemical, metallurgical, paper, foodstuff, engineering, aeronautical, and leather industries, and tourism is important. The principal towns are Toulouse (the administrative centre), Muret, and St-Gaudens; Luchon is a resort for winter sports.

The south is mountainous, containing some of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, including Mont Perdiguère (3,219 m/10,561 ft). The valleys are very fertile. The centre of the département is a hilly plateau. The chief river is the Garonne, and the Canal du Midi and the Canal Latéral à la Garonne cross the north of the département.

Haute-Garonne is formed from parts of the former provinces of Languedoc and Gascony.
