La Halle Bridge, in the centre of Annecy, the principal town of the Haute-Savoie département of France.

Département in the Rhône-Alpes region of France; area 4,391 sq km/1,695 sq mi; population (1999 est) 631,700. The land is mountainous – the département includes Mont Blanc (4,807 m/15,772 ft). The chief rivers are the Arve, Dranse, Ussel, and Fier, tributaries of the Rhône. Much of the land is forested. Cereals and hardy root crops are grown, and on the lower slopes orchard fruits, vines, and tobacco are cultivated. There is dairy production, particularly cheese. The most fertile district is in the north and northwest. Industry is limited, but includes textiles, watches, and clocks. Tourists come in both summer and winter: one of the world's most popular skiing spots is the mountain resort of Chamonix. The principal towns are Annecy (the administrative centre), Bonneville, Thonon, and St-Julien.

Haute-Savoie is formed from the northern part of the former province of Savoy.
