Haute-Vienne

Département in the Limousin region of central France; area 5,512 sq km/2,129 sq mi; population (1999 est) 353,900. Haute-Vienne is extremely hilly; the River Vienne flows between the Marche hills in the centre of the département and the Limousin hills in the south. Some cereals and hemp are grown, and there is widespread breeding of livestock. Minerals exploited in the area include uranium, wolfram, manganese, and kaolin. There are important porcelain, leather, paper, and textile industries. The principal towns are Limoges (the administrative capital), Bellac, and Rochechouart.

Haute-Vienne is comprised of parts of the old provinces of Limousin, Marche, Poitou, and Berry.
