Uppingham

Uppingham

Market town in Rutland, central England, 10 km/6 mi south of Oakham; population (2001) 3,950. Part of the church dates from the 14th century.

Uppingham School, a private school, was founded here in the 16th century; one of the original school buildings is in the churchyard.

Jeremy Taylor (1613–1667), once chaplain to Charles I, preached in the church 1638–1643.
