Uppman, Theodore

Uppman, Theodore (1920–2005)

US baritone. He studied at the Curtis Institute and sang Papageno at Stanford University, in 1946. In 1951 he created Billy Budd at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. He sang Pelléas at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1953, where until 1977 he was a regular performer as Papageno, Masetto, and Guglielmo. He also sang in first performances of operas by Floyd, Villa-Lobos and Pasatieri; he appeared in Bernstein's A Quiet Place at Houston (1983), La Scala, Milan (1984), and Vienna (1986).
