Urawa

Capital of Saitama prefecture, Honshu, Japan, on the River Ara, 20 km/12 mi north of Tokyo; population (1998 est) 467,100. It is a major administrative centre. Industries include the manufacture of cameras, lenses, metal, machinery, and foodstuffs. Since the 1950s, it has become a residential suburb for Tokyo and Yokohama. Primroses (sakuraso) draw visitors to the city each May.

Urawa is the home of Saitama University (1949), and nearby is Sagiyama, a sanctuary for migrating herons.

Japan's key defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka has decided to leave his J-League side Urawa Reds for a club overseas, ahead of his World Cup challenge, a press report said on Friday.
8/4/2009 6:56:14 AM Japan defender Tulio has put the boot into his J-League team Urawa Reds, blasting the "sad" failure of club officials to sign any big-name players.
