Urbana

Industrial city and administrative headquarters of Champaign County, east-central Illinois, 200 km/125 mi southwest of Chicago; population (2000) 36,400. It is an administrative and service centre for a grain-growing area. Products include processed foods, scientific instruments, electronics, and metal goods. With adjoining Champaign, Urbana is the principal home of the University of Illinois (1867). It was first settled in 1822.
