Urhan, Chrétien (1790–1845)

Belgian violinist, violinist, and composer. He learnt the violin from his father. He was heard by the Empress Joséphine and sent by her to Paris with a recommendation to Lesueur. He joined the Opéra orchestra in 1814, becoming leader in 1823 and solo violin in 1836. He appeared much in public, playing chamber music and also performing on the viola and viola d'amore. He gave early French performances of Bach, Schubert and Beethoven.

two string quintets, two quintets for three violas, cello and double bass (with drums ad lib), and other chamber music; violin and piano pieces; piano works, including duets; songs and duets.
