Uri

Canton of Switzerland on the southeast of Lake Lucerne; area 1,075 sq km/415 sq mi; population (1999 est) 35,700. The capital is Altdorf. The main river is the Reuss. Uri was founded in 1291 and (together with Schwyz and Nidwalden) was one of the three original cantons of the Swiss Confederation. Forestry and tourism are the main industries.

Cattle-rearing, beekeeping, and cheesemaking are practised in this rural canton, but more than half its area is forested or unsuitable for agriculture. The population of Uri is mainly German-speaking and Roman Catholic.
