Ursuleac, Viorica (1894–1985)

Romanian soprano. She studied in Berlin with Lilli Lehmann, making her debut at Zagreb in 1922, as Charlotte. She sang in Frankfurt under her husband, Clemens Krauss (1926–30). In 1928 she took part in the Wiesbaden first performance of Křenek's opera Der Diktator/The Dictator. She was best known for her performances of Strauss: she created Arabella (Dresden, 1933), Maria in Strauss's Friedenstag/Day of Peace (Munich, 1938), and the Countess in Capriccio (Munich, 1942). In the 1930s she sang at the State Opera houses of Vienna and Berlin; she appeared in Munich during World War II. She made her London debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1934, as Desdemona. Other roles included Ariadne, the Empress, Sieglinde, and Tosca.
