Ushant

French island 18 km/11 mi west of Brittany, area 15 sq km/6 sq mi, off which the British admiral Richard Howe defeated the French navy 1794 on ‘the Glorious First of June’; population (2001 est) 1,000. The chief town is Lampaul.
