Skopje

Capital and industrial city of Macedonia; population (2002) 446,800. Industries include iron, steel, chromium mining, and food processing.

History

It stands on the site of an ancient town destroyed by an earthquake in the 5th century. The city was taken in 1282 by the Serbian king Milutin, who made it his capital, and in 1392 by the Turks, when it became part of the Ottoman Empire. Captured by Serbia during the Balkan Wars of 1912–13, it became part of Yugoslavia in 1929. Again destroyed by an earthquake 1963, Skopje was rebuilt on a safer site nearby.
