Usulután

Maritime department in southeast El Salvador; area 2,147 sq km/829 sq mi; population (1992 est) 317,100. It is mountainous in the north but the land of the coastal plain is part of the country's most fertile zone, and maize, beans, cotton, coffee, sugar cane, and hardwood timber are grown. The capital is Usulután (population (1992 est) 63,000), a trading centre for the area's produce, lying at the southern base of Usulután volcano.

The lake Laguna El Jocotál to the east is a protected reserve for migratory birds.
