Bujumbura

Capital and largest city of Burundi, it is also a port located at the northeastern end of Lake Tanganyika; population (2007 calc) 342,400. Bujumbura is the main banking and financial centre of Burundi; industries include food processing, textiles, leather, paper, and paint manufacture. It was founded in 1899 by German colonists.

The city was made capital of the Belgian mandate of Ruanda-Urundi in 1923 and was known as Usumbura. The reduction of its hinterland and continual political disturbance in Burundi led to a slower growth than in most African capitals in the post-independence decade. The University of Burundi was established in 1960.
