Ute Mountain Indian Reservation

American Indian reservation; area 2,332 sq km/901 sq mi; population (1990) 1,300, of which 96% is American Indian. It is situated in southwest Colorado, to the south of Cortez and Mesa Verde, extending to the Four Corners. Towaoc is its administrative headquarters. A park in the reservation preserves Anasazi ruins. Southern Ute Indian Reservation adjoins the Ute Mountain reservation to the east; area 2,742 sq km/1,059 sq mi; population (1990) 7,800, of which 13% is American Indian. Horse racing and a casino attract visitors.
