Uthman (c. 574–656)

Third caliph (leader of the Islamic Empire) from 644, a son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad. Under his rule, the Arabs became a naval power and extended their rule to North Africa and Cyprus, but Uthman's personal weaknesses led to his assassination. He was responsible for the compilation of the authoritative version of the Koran, the sacred book of Islam.
