Uthman (c. 574–656)Third caliph (leader of the Islamic Empire) from 644, a son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad. Under his rule, the Arabs became a naval power and extended their rule to North Africa and Cyprus, but Uthman's personal weaknesses led to his assassination.
