Utica

City and river port in central New York State, USA, on the Mohawk River, near the Adirondack Mountains; population (2000) 60,700. Engine parts, electronics, beer, leather goods, and clothing are produced. Utica was an important textile centre from about 1850 to 1950. The first Woolworths store was opened here in 1879.

Utica was founded in 1773 on the site of a former American Indian Iroquois centre and Fort Schuyler; it was named after the British fort until 1798.

The city is the seat of Utica College of Syracuse University (1946) and the State University of New York College of Technology at Utica–Rome (1966).
