Uttini, Francesco Antoni Baldassare

Uttini, Francesco Antoni Baldassare (1723–1795)

Italian singer and composer. He was attached to the touring Mingotti company as composer and conductor. Having travelled to Sweden with them he stayed there, becoming music director to the king at Stockholm in 1767. His Thetis och Pelée is claimed to be the first grand opera in Swedish.

After studying with Giacomo Perti and Padre Martini in Bologna, he was elected a member of the Philharmonic Academy there in 1743 and became its president in 1751. As conductor of the Mingotti opera troupe he travelled to Copenhagen 1753–54, and in 1755 settled in Stockholm, becoming musical director to the court in 1767. He visited London the following year.

13 Italian (texts by Metastasio) and five French operas, Swedish operas Thetis och Pelée (1773) and Aline (1776) (all mostly lost).
