Uusimaa

Southern province of Finland on the Gulf of Finland; land area 9,859 sq km/3,807 sq mi; population (1996) 1,343,000. The land is low and flat with agriculture predominating; there is also some quarrying. The province includes Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and the new town of Tapiola.
