Uvalde

Town and administrative headquarters of Uvalde County, south-central Texas; population (1990) 14,700. It is located in a ranching area, 128 km/79 mi west-southwest of San Antonio, on the Leona River, at the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau. The town exploits sand, lime, basalt, and asphalt deposits, and processes wool, mohair, honey, feed, and vegetables. Southwest Texas Junior College (1946) and a Texas A&M research centre are in the town.

Settled in 1853 next to Fort Inge (1849), Uvalde was a rough outpost through most of the 19th century. The former home of US vice-president John Nance Garner (1868-1967) is now a museum.
