Raitio, Väinö (1891–1945)

Finnish composer. He studied the piano with his mother, and later composition with Erkki Melartin and Furuhjelm, and with Ilyinsky in Moscow 1916–17. He taught composition at Viipuri 1932–38, but settled at Helsinki and devoted himself entirely to composition.

Works

Opera and stage

the operas Jephtha's Daughter (1931), Princess Cecilia (1936), and three others; ballet Waterspout (1929).

Orchestral

symphonies, ten symphonic poems; piano concerto, concerto for violin and cello (1936), poem for cello and orchestra (1915).

Chamber

string quartet, piano quintet; violin and piano sonata; songs.
